Facts: Dispelling the Fiction about Wine in Grocery Stores

Grocers are pushing to be allowed to sell wine within their grocery stores.  Money is the main motivation, NOT public interest.

Departments with adult beverages will be open to all customers whether they are adults or not, with little supervision, or supervised by teenagers, or with no supervision at all.

They want wine transactions to be conducted in cash register lanes that are staffed by teenagers or are sold in self-scanner lanes.

Wine is not beer.

Wine has more than double the alcohol content of beer, which means a person can get drunk twice as fast.

Wine has a high alcohol proof content, and this is why our Kentucky legislators, and many other states, wisely group it with vodka, bourbon, tequila, scotch and gin when it comes to licensing and sales.

Wine in groceries is a poor idea.

In their own words,  here’s what the grocers say:

1. “It’s simple.”
2. “Only 16 states do not currently sell wine in grocery stores, why not Kentucky?”
3. “It’s what our customers want.”
4. “Kentucky wines will benefit.”
5. “They want to break the current liquor store monopoly over wine.”
6. “Tax Revenue will be raised.”
